Everything about our stay at Alton\'s was just awesome. My friend and I visited the islands for a week -- Roatan was nice, but we ended up wishing we\'d stayed longer on Utila. The DMs and crowd we stayed with were really cool (Katya, Sarah, Bob, Natasha, Christopher, everyone -- you guys rock) and I\'m thinking seriously about heading back at some point to stay longer/do my DM. (I wasn\'t even thinking about going beyond Rescue before, so that\'s saying something.) Great people, great culture, great diving -- keep it up!)

At Alton’s Dive Center our experienced and easy going instructors will guide you step by step through all you need to learn to become a safe and skillful scuba diver, leaving you with some incredible memories and a whole new world to go and discover for yourself!

By the end of the course you will have earned yourself a lifetime certification that lets you go diving anytime you want!

We pride ourselves on small class sizes, quality equipment and an attention to individual student needs that is second to none.

Our popular beginners open water course is divided into 4 parts:

An optional breath hold diving or skin diving techniques session, including free diving (breath hold diving) techniques and basic skin dive rescue skills to kick off the course. This is given at no extra cost to you and is a great way to start the course if you are a little nervous or simply want to put your snorkeling experience into a more formal context. We start work on some basic equipment skills and underwater techniques in this section of the course.

The classroom work covers all basic dive knowledge and theory. Your instructor will take you through all you need to know about scuba equipment, diving safely and simply getting the most enjoyment from your diving. You will learn everything you need to know in order to safely plan and execute a dive.

Confined water dives; in shallow calm water just like a swimming pool where you will learn and practice how to use the scuba equipment, some basic dive skills, and experience breathing underwater for the first time!

The fourth component is the open water part of the training, when you will take your newly acquired dive knowledge and skills to the sea and experience diving on the fringing reef surrounding the island. Starting with dive sites well suited to the novice diver your instructor will take you to a maximum depth of 40ft/12m on the first dives you make. By the end of the course your instructor will have accompanied you down to a maximum depth of 60ft/18m!
