Coral Reefs are among the world's oldest and most diverse ecosystems. They have survived millions of years of natural disturbances, but are increasingly threatened by human activities. The Coral Reef Conservation Specialty course teaches divers about the vital role of coral reefs in the marine environment, and how you can help protect them.
The course focuses on the vertebrates and invertebrates of the complex living reef. This course examines coral zonation, seagrass beds, lagoons, mangroves, and the common reef algae, invertebrates and reef fishes.The course also familiarizes participants with the current state of the world's coral reefs and how they can help.
• Covers the importance of coral reefs to marine ecosystems and coastal areas
• Coral reef biology, association and competition
• The status of the world's coral reefs
• How participants can help, including responsible diving and snorkeling practices
NAUI Underwater Ecologist (Coral Reef)
• Must be NAUI Scuba Diver or equivalent. Can be taught as a Skin Diving Specialty, in which case Minimum certification is NAUI Skin Diver or equivalent.
• Minimum 2 dives
• Minimum age: 15 / 12 for junior certification
